The Essential Safety Gear Checklist for Kids Riding Dirt Bikes
Share
Getting your child their first MotoTec dirt bike from Dirt Moto Bikes is an exciting milestone, but before they hit the trails, safety needs to be the number one priority.
Whether they are riding a beginner 24v electric bike or graduating to our fast youth ATVs, having the right protective gear can prevent injuries and give parents peace of mind. Here is the ultimate safety gear checklist for young riders.
1. A DOT-Approved Motocross Helmet
A standard bicycle helmet will not cut it for off-road riding. You need a full-face motocross helmet that is DOT (Department of Transportation) approved. The full-face design includes a chin bar that protects your child’s face and jaw in the event of a spill over the handlebars. Ensure the helmet fits snugly; it shouldn't wobble when they shake their head.
2. Goggles for Eye Protection
Most motocross helmets do not have visors, so goggles are a must. They protect your child's eyes from flying dirt, rocks, branches, and wind—which is especially important if they are riding closely behind a sibling's gas dirt bike.
3. Body Armor (Chest and Back Protectors)
Also known as a roost deflector, body armor protects the chest, ribs, and back from impact. For young beginners on low-speed electric dirt bikes, a lightweight chest protector is usually sufficient. As they graduate to faster bikes and rougher trails, consider a full pressure suit that includes built-in elbow and shoulder pads.
4. Knee and Elbow Guards
Knees and elbows are usually the first things to hit the ground during a minor tip-over. Hard-shell knee and elbow guards strap on easily over or under riding clothes and provide crucial joint protection.
5. Proper Riding Boots
Tennis shoes offer zero ankle support and can easily slip off footpegs. While full, stiff motocross boots can be heavy for toddlers, older kids should definitely wear them. At a minimum, beginners should wear sturdy, over-the-ankle boots with a grippy sole to protect their feet and lower legs from the bike's hot motor or exhaust.
6. Riding Gloves
Grip is everything when controlling a dirt bike. Motocross gloves prevent blisters, provide better throttle control, and protect knuckles from scrapes.
Final Tip: Dress them for the crash, not the ride! Once your child is properly geared up, they will feel more confident and you can relax and watch them enjoy their ride.
